I just wanted to share this video posted by post-rock band Maybeshewill from their recent tour in China. This would be an unusual thing for me to do on this blog, however I think I can justify it because I often listen to this band/genre when I am painting. Often when I listen to them it just makes me feel like I want to do something creative; I find their music very inspiring and beautiful. And there is always that link to China, which I do sometimes blog about. Post-rock is an under appreciated genre, guys…listen! I hope you enjoy the video.
We sailed through endless skies
Stars shine like eyes
The black night sighs
The moon in silver trees
Falls down in tears
Light of the night
These pictures taken recently with my holga remind me of the lyrics to the Black Sabbath song Planet Caravan. I love the dreamy images brought about by the misty, astral, lyrics, and think that the haziness of these photographs suit it well. The song is supposed to be about floating through the universe with your lover, and was written almost spontaneously. When I was a teenager I used to call this my “sleepy song”, and loved to listen to it as I fell asleep. The dreamlike imagery that this embodies so well is what I often look to when creating my own art, whether it be painting or photography. I find the night sky and the moon especially beautiful. I am not very articulate with words, or music, and seek to put a little of this beauty I see into the images I create. I admire how the four band members so effortlessly reflected this sentiment in their song.
